Editorial & Fact-Checking Policy

How we research, independently verify, and continuously update our energy tariff benchmarks and EV charging guides.

1. Our Commitment to Accuracy & Independence

Domestic electricity pricing for electric vehicles is filled with marketing claims that can be misleading when taken out of context. An off-peak rate of 7.0p/kWh sounds attractive, but if paired with a 65p/day standing charge or a 32p/kWh daytime rate, a low-mileage driver may end up paying significantly more than on a standard variable tariff.

EV Rate Check operates with strict editorial independence. Our primary obligation is to consumer clarity and mathematical precision. We do not publish promotional sponsored reviews disguised as guides, and energy suppliers cannot pay to improve their rank in our comparison tools.

2. Our 4-Step Research & Publication Process

Step 1: Primary Sourcing

Official Rate Cards Only

We collect tariff data exclusively from primary regulatory filings and published supplier rate cards (e.g. Octopus Energy, British Gas, EDF, E.ON Next, OVO, PG&E, Ontario Energy Board). We do not rely on third-party scrapers or unverified press releases.

Step 2: Technical Verification

Peer & Engineering Review

Every calculation model and technical guide is reviewed by qualified power systems analysts. We cross-verify electrical code rules, fuse capacities, and charger efficiency assumptions against IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and the US National Electrical Code (NEC).

Step 3: Regular Cadence Audits

Weekly & Monthly Checks

Top market tariffs (e.g., Octopus Intelligent Go, OVO Charge Anytime, British Gas Electric Driver) are checked weekly for unit rate or standing charge alterations. All secondary plans are audited at least monthly.

Step 4: Outdated Data Flags

45-Day Expiry Warnings

If an energy tariff or rebate has not had its rate card re-verified within 45 days, our system automatically displays a prominent amber badge warning users that the rate may be outdated.

3. Byline & Fact-Checking Standards

Every guide published on EV Rate Check includes:

The real name, professional role, and biographical credentials of the primary author.
The name and engineering credentials of the fact-checker who audited the mathematical models and regulatory claims.
A visible "Last updated" date corresponding to the most recent tariff audit.
Direct reference citations linking to official supplier rate cards or statutory rebate authorities.

4. Corrections Policy

Despite our rigorous verification protocols, energy suppliers frequently adjust standing charges or peak unit rates with little advance notice. When an error or rate change is brought to our attention, our policy is to:

Verify the change directly against the supplier's published tariff document within 24 hours.
Update the corresponding dataset in our codebase and rebuild our static comparison tools immediately.
Append a clear correction notice at the bottom of the affected guide if the discrepancy was material.

5. Strict Separation of Advertising & Content
